Cáceres, what’s wrong with it? Cáceres is a city where:
Storks are the kings of the streets. They perch on rooftops, towers, and lampposts. Some of them behave as if they pay taxes and own half the city.
Adventures in the style of “Game of Thrones” – Cáceres is so beautiful that its historic center was featured in the series. Walking through its cobbled streets and looking at the medieval towers, you almost expect a dragon or at least a knight to emerge from around the corner. The atmosphere is so intense that you can’t help but feel like a character in some adventure novel.
Food that makes you forget about diets. Love jamón? Then welcome to a gastronomic paradise. The jamón in Cáceres is so good that we packed a couple of kilograms to take home. And how about migas—fried breadcrumbs with sausages? Caprichos de Yema is practically addictive—little sweet balls made from egg yolk, sugar, and something magical.
Dancing with the wind – in Cáceres, it seems the wind decided to become a landmark too. It tries to snatch your hat, whisper an old tale into your ear, and maybe steal a banknote from your hand.
Local legends and secrets – the locals love telling stories about their city. From scary tales about medieval towers to funny anecdotes about storks “stealing” someone’s sandwich. You listen, laugh, ask questions… and then realize you’ve already fallen in love with this city.
So, what’s wrong?
First, we got hungry and found a fine-dining restaurant with great reviews and ratings. However, the staff treated us arrogantly, spending half an hour describing each dish in Spanish despite our pleas to stop this pointless performance. Tiny portions of food with strange combinations we didn’t enjoy left us unimpressed. After spending a hefty amount, we crossed the street to a noisy eatery where we enjoyed the aforementioned delights for pennies.
Initially, we planned to fly over Cáceres on our way from Lisbon to Madrid. But high prices for flights and the cost of returning a rental car in another country forced us to rethink. Instead, we covered 600 km, breaking the trip in half, with Cáceres conveniently in the middle.
We quickly booked an Airbnb, and everything seemed fine. Before leaving, we tidied up the place and even swept the floors.
The host left a review saying we were lovely people but claimed the apartment was unfit for the next guest. Perhaps they expected us to polish the glasses, wash and remake the beds, and clean the windows as a bonus.
This never happened to us again but made us reconsider using Airbnb when other platforms offer similar conditions.

The city’s walls, constructed during the Moorish rule in the 12th century, still stand today, enclosing the historic heart of Cáceres.
